     Is a term that has been used lately to describe different types of malicious software. It usually refers to viruses, Trojans or worms. A Virus is by attaching themselves to other programs so they can spread. Not all viruses are destructive, some are just annoying. A worm is similar to a virus and may be malicious. The difference between a worm and a virus is that a worm does not need to attach itself to other programs in order to spread. A Trojan may be designed to look like a regular program that contains hidden code which may be malicious and does not usually spread.
Popup
     Most popups were created to be used as a form of advertisement but there are some which were created for the purposes of downloading and other reasons. The sure thing about popups is they can be very annoying and luckily there is software which will help prevent them.
Spyware
     One type of software which can slow down a computer is called spyware. Spyware is a type of software that is usually used to track where surfer goes while on the web. There are a variety of other tasks it can perform but this is probably the most popular use. If your computer starts to slow down this could be one of the reasons.

     Someone I know asked me to check her computer since it was running very slow, what I found was over a 1000 spyware programs which were running on her system. There are software programs which were created to check a computer for spyware. NoAdWare is a program which removes spyware.
Virus
     A virus is a computer program which creates copies of itself on other computers. There are a variety of different types of viruses and they are changing everyday. Just as there are different types of viruses they also perform different functions. Their functions range from simply being annoying to actually destroying software and / or documents on your computer. When a computer has a virus it is said to be infected. Some viruses do not even allow the user to know they are infected.

     Most viruses can be avoided by taking a few precautions. Only opening emails from those you know will help in avoiding viruses since a large variety of viruses are passed on this way. Installing disks into your computer is another way in which they may enter your system. There are also web sites which will load them on your computer without your knowledge.

     One of the best ways to avoid viruses is by running an antivirus program on your computer. Antivirus programs usually run by themselves on a daily basis. You will find some anti virus programs here. Most antivirus programs will automatically update themselves. Updates are required since viruses are always changing and new ones may not be as easily detectable. Of course there are also a variety of antivirus programs which may be purchased. The most important points to take from this article are as follows:
  • Viruses should be avoided at all costs.
  • Only open emails from those you know
  • Do not insert disks into your computer unless you know they are free of viruses
  • Run an antivirus program daily
